On May 1, 2013, Joseph Allen, former Secretary-Treasurer of National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 588 in Athens, Georgia, was sentenced to one year in prison, one year of probation, and was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $50,000. In March 2013, Allen pled guilty to one count of filing a false report. The investigation found that Allen took out a bank loan in the union’s name without authorization of the executive board or membership. Allen also used the union’s credit and debit cards for personal purchases and wrote unauthorized checks to himself and for personal purchases. This investigation was conducted jointly with the Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General and U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General.
